I made these with yarn dyed by Scout J. I love purple - and these are for me! I loved them so much I made them, wore them to the movies where I think I lost one, and made another to keep my pair. I don't have enough yarn to lose another so I'll be paying closer attention! I added an extra cable round at the top and did a regular bind off. I like to cover more of my fingers - it's supposed to be a high of -4 today here in Wisconsin - so I'd say good instincts:) Keep on Fetching!

Pride and Prejudice Fetching

Every time I knit this pattern I get new ideas and inspiration. I am starting to suspect there is some magic involved... Anyway, I've knitted my most straight-forward Fetchings to date, a pair for my aunt's birthday. I cast on Friday and knitted straight through the BBC/A&E Pride and Prejudice mini series. This colourway, incidentally, seems to be taken straight out of that. I didn't quite make it for the birthday party Saturday - I finished the thumb on the second glove this morning. This however gave me the opportunity of taking some proper pictures of the second glove, rather than just the mobile shots of the first and the second-in-making:

I used Garnstudio's Silke-Alpaca in colourway 7120, used the double cast-on (I really should have gone with the cable cast-on though - next time), and did a regular bind-off because I thought my aunt would probably appreciate that better. I still like the picot bind-off for myself though. The yarn, I can report, was an excellent substitution. I used approx. 1 and 1/3 skein, maybe a little more. I also added another round to the thumb.

This pair has actually been almost done since October, but before weaving in the ends (in December - it only took me something like six weeks from the date I cast off to really finish them...) I made a change from the picot edge bo to the regular bo to avoid the top opening flaring out. I still think the picot edge bo is prettier, though!

These were a Christmas/birthday present for a friend, who hinted she`d like her own pair back in October when she saw my Fetching. The yarn is Austermann`s Inka-Color with 70% alpaca and 30% wool. These are really warm and snuggly, and I think the longer cuff (also requested by aforementioned friend) is more practical for winter (in Finland anyway). I have to make myself a pair with a longer cuff too. Plus, these are such an instant gratification kind of project!* I think I need that.

Well, I'm completely over this pattern now. Don't get me wrong, I love its simplicity as well as the fact that you get to do a little bit everything in a short time and wind up with a fantastic creation....I'm just maxxed out, I believe this is pair #5. Despite my Fetching fatigue, I am very happy with the results in what will be my last pair. I used the Elsebeth Lavold Silky Cashmere in petrol. It knits up like a dream and gives beautiful stitch definition. It's expensive enough that I wouldn't use it for anything bigger than a project this size. So, all of you keep rolling along with Fetching, I am now officially on hiatus!

Finally, a post! I've been knitting Fetching after Fetching - 4 pairs total, each a little different. The orange are with DB Cashmerino, pattern as written. Black are with KnitPicks Andean Silk, and an extra cable round on the bottom and top. Darker purple are Kid-n-Ewe with #5 needles and extra length, and I continued the picot edge on the thumb. Brighter purple are Karabella Aurora 8 with extra length (I think I got this pair just right). All are holiday gifts except the Kid-n-Ewe. They are a wee bit scratchy so go to me (I don't mind it). I love the versatility of this pattern!

I have made a third pair of these seriously addictive mitts. I made this pair out of the suggested Cashmerino. I added an extra cable row by the knuckle to make them a teeny bit longer and did a regular bind off - I think this is my favorite pair yet!

I made these for my Secret Pal (shhh!) - she's already received them but doesn't know who I am yet. I made these using DPNs, and very soft 100% acrylic baby yarn from the UK. I believe it was called Snuggly DK. I modified the pattern for her smaller hands by taking out one pattern repeat horizontally - so I only cast on 40 stitches.

I recently completed a pair of Fetching. They are made in Debbie Bliss Merino Aran and used approx. 1 1/4 balls. They are really comfy and I'm making a pair for my SP9.

Well I finally finished up three pairs of the Fetching gloves from Knitty. With those stubby fingers, I was born to be a hand model, don't you think?

All three pairs are knitted with Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran. I recommend knitting with that yarn if you get the chance. I found some online for $5 a ball, and while I didn't get the exact colors I would have liked, I was stoked to get three luxurious finished projects for under $20.

I have another Fetching complete and have started a One-Cable scarf from One Skein to compliment them - I am getting cranked up enough about the project to make a set - eek! I made this pair with the recommended Debbie Bliss Cashmerino and really love the thickness and overall fabric. I think I'll stick with it for any future pairs. I did keep the picot edge despite my reservations because I figured that the new yarn deserved a try - it's okay - and I have this pair in mind for my mom - who made over the picot - so the edging had to stay. But next time, I think I'll do a regular bind off and maybe even add another cable row to make them a teeny bit longer - I should add though, I had about 20 inches of yarn left!

I finished a pair this weekend - I used Casacade 220 superwash that I had laying around. I really like them but I think I will try what I have seen others' trying and bind off plain jane - the picot edge just kind of curls up and you can almost miss it. And maybe add another little cable row to make them a teeny bit longer. Also, my next pair will be in the recommended yarn, cashmerino to see how it may knit up differently. This was first go at cables - I was pleasantly surprised that they were pretty easy - this was a good introduction project! Can't wait to get the next pair on the needles.

After completing two pairs in other yarns, I now see why the pattern calls for the DB Cashmerino Aran. It's a dream and the definition on the stitches is beautiful. Sadly, however, I gambled and lost as I ran out of yarn about three rows before the picot bind off and had to scramble to substitute some yarn from the stash. Surprisingly it's not noticeable, but I was still annoyed, mainly at myself for only buying one skein. Live and learn... But I love the pattern and am sure that I have not made my last pair of these beauties!

I changed the pattern a bit... I added an extra cable at the end because mine came out too short (I'm not sure why) and I wanted the gloves to cover my knuckles. At first I feared that adding a couple extra rows on one glove might result in having to buy another skein of yarn to finish the second, but I actually have some yarn left over. I also just bound off regularly because I didn't like the way the opening flares out with the picot bind off.

I'm planning on knitting another pair in light blue for my sister, and red for my roommate.

First Fetching and Mini Fetching

Hi everyone,
This is my first post in the KAL. I've already made a few pair of fetching- these are first and second pairs I made.

The larger pair are knitted using the normal fetching pattern and DB Cashmerino Aran. The smaller pink ones were knitted with DB Cashmerino DK on 2.5mm needles. They are 11cm long and fit a 5 year old child.
I really like this pattern, it's nice and quick but interesting too.

This was my first time knitting cables- it wasn't as bad as I thought, in fact I quite enjoyed it. Seems like a good pattern to try out cables on.
I'm thinking about trying to make a matching hat. Has anyone else done this?

Hello all!

I`m a Finnish novice knitter. I`m excited to join this KAL and share my love for the pattern since I haven`t found that many Fetching enthusiasts among Finnish bloggers.

Here`s the first pair I`ve knit, modeled by my Mum:

Unfortunately my LYS doesn`t sell Debbie Bliss yarns, but I found some nice Rowan yarn instead: RY Cashmerino Aran (it`s 57% extra fine merino, 33% microfibre and 10% cashmere). I love the feel of the yarn, it`s real soft, and I also love the colour (it`s called 'bud'). (Unfortunately it`s a tad too expensive for a student to buy in large quantities.)

What I really like about the pattern is that it`s easy and quick to knit, but the result is so nice! This was my first time ever knitting cables, but definitely not the last. Somehow the thought of an extra needle (I heard about knitting cables WITHOUT an extra needle only last week) made it sound really difficult, though it turned out to be relatively easy. I`d really like to make a cabled scarf next.

I`m not done with Fetching yet: my friend saw my mitts and hinted she`d like a pair for Christmas - which is great, since I was going to knit her some anyway. And I think I need a second pair for myself...

Finished Beachcombers

I have been waiting to post the finished picture since I thought I'd somehow find time to go down to the beach and take the pictures, but alas, that is not to be. I am quite happy with the result, although the thumbs came out weird, I'll see if I fix it sometime or just let it be. It's not visible in this pic.

Just need to find a store that sells the recommended Debbie Bliss yarn for the four I'm planning as yule gifts. I like to experiment, but I usually don't with gifts, besides, I seem to have run out of "odd balls" in my stash. What a stashbuster this pattern is!

Plus I already have a ball of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in baby pink left over from a cardigan a while back and was going to knit a baby's cap for pregnant friends but they kept having boys....

I did indeed get the yarn after work on Friday (ok, out of my stash, but still!) and these little beauties are ready to go for tomorrow's commute! I used some Classic Elite Lush #4415 that I got on remainder last spring at Purl and that I'd completely forgotten about. I really enjoyed this pattern a lot, although the thumb was slightly tricky. I somehow need to figure out how to do this better on the next pair. On the left hand I stupidly did a knit cast on: You'll notice that it's curling at the bottom,hopefully blocking will take care of that. I did the recommended cable cast on (which happens to be my favorite cast on anyway) on the right hand and you can see what a nice edge it gives. Live and learn to read the directions more closely is the take home message! I love this pattern and can't wait to try it in the recommended yarn.

"Beachcomber" Fetching

After unravelling back and forth and using up more yarn than I expected for my fish scarf, I decided not to make these gloves only in the nature brown cashmere yarn, but found this old Cotton Sport yarn in a bag and decided to use it for the cable parts of the gloves - inspired by Dawn's earlier Fetchings in two colours. So far, I really like the visual effect of the two yarns' different thickness and feel, it reminded me of autumn sea waves lapping at a soft, sandy beach (hence the title). Added 5 more stitches to these and some extra rounds on the "body" of the glove. Will post another finished picture when they're done!

problem

So, I had no problems with the first one - however, everytime I start the second one something is wrong. First I cast on way tooooo looooose, then way tooo tight, and I thought I had it right the third time until noticed that somehow I had a quarter inch of gap right in the beginning where I had joined to work in the round!!! I am so frustrated because the first one seemed so much easier!!! I suppose I will cast on for the second one tonight or tomorrow and see how it goes.

Here is the complete pair. I like how they came out. I wanted to try something different with the fetching pattern and I think I've found it since you can do all kinds of striping. I had originally intended to only stripe the cuffs but when my fiance saw what I was doing, I asked him if he wanted more stripes and he said yes so there they are. :) The next pair I am going to start are for my sister. She didn't pick out debbie bliss yarn so I'm going to see how this pattern holds up with other yarn. Wish me luck! :) Thanks for all the comments too!

Fetching on the small side

So I was up until here last night, and all looked well and neat:

It looked short, so I tried it on:

To me, this is a little too stretched and short. So it looks as though I'll unravel it and start again (not a problem, as this is such a quick knit, I decided not to knit a swatch since the first glove could easily fill this function). The question is though, should I add five more stitches or should I go up a needle size? What do you think? The yarn is a 4-ply cashmere.

This is my first knit along, but my second pair of Fetching. My first ones looked like this:

Knitted with two strands of mohair, they're a bit bulky but I like the dramatic look of them.

Now, I've cast on for my second pair in a 100% cashmere yarn from Christel Seyfarth. The colour is "nature brown", and the stitch definition (well, at least in comparison to the mohair) is superb. So far, I've knitted the first three cable turns on the right glove and it looks a wee bit small, but here's hoping it'll turn out alright...

I got it!!! I figured out the thumb! Here is the finished one... Note, I really messed up the picot edging, and I am alright with that. This was a real learning experience for me. First thumb. First time knitting in the round on dpns. First picot edging. Now, I just have to start the second one.... hehehehe.....

I Fetched a Second Pair

This is my second pair of Fetching gloves and these are all mine. I am so happy with the modifications I made to them. I decreased by one stitch in the Knit part of the ribbing on the last 4 rounds ( a snugger fit around the knuckles) and I knit them on size 4 needles instead of 6. Finally, I just BO in the stitch instead of trying to picot my way out. They fit me great and I will wear them with pride this fall! Happy Knitting, all!!

Finished Fetching

It was so quick from CO to BO I barely remember knitting them.

I knit the second glove over the last two nights while watching the Andy Warhol documentary on PBS's "American Masters." My gloves are dedicated to the memory of my fellow western Pennsylvanian, Andy.

I do think I printed the pattern incorrectly or missed something b/c my cuffs seem to be missing a cable twist compared to everyone else's and I have a little bit of leftover yarn. I used Debbie Bliss's cashmerino in evergreen. I think I'll make them again in a brighter color, like a pink. This is a lovely pattern!

So, this was two days ago, and now I am up to the thumb hole... I am so confused. This is the first time that I have knitted on dpn's, so I think this is going really well. I really hope that I can figure out the thumb because I want to finish this one, and the mate before Monday morning. I really want to wear them to work!!! I am using a varigated yarn - which is not so great for cables. I will probably make another pair in a solid color.

I've really enjoyed making these fingerless gloves. They're surprisingly easy and look much more complicated than they are. I made the Navy pair for my mum and the Lilac for myself. The Navy ones feature the picot bind off. Sadly, while I was finishing the second glove of the Lilac pair I ran out of yarn so had to unknit the top five rows of the first glove then bind off normally. Despite the initial panic, I think the Lilac pair have turned out really well so all was not lost. I've got three more balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran so will make a few more pairs since they knit up so quickly.

First I want to thank Wendee for commenting on my blog and allowing me to find out about this kal! When I the edition of knitty that sports fetching on the cover first came out, I thought..."Wow, I bet I could do those..." I especially liked the fact that in the write-up it said you could have a completed pair over the course of a weekend..oh and you only need one skein? Marvy. :) The other thing that did it for me was that if I had never cabled before, this would be a perfect place to start!

Here's my completed pair. I know they look different. I don't care. The top one is the one I knitted last. I didn't like the picot bind off that I ended up with in the first one. I didn't like that it caused the yarn to curl upwards. So I just did a regular bind off.

Has anyone tried a different yarn? I know that Wendee posted about trying out the rowan cash soft yarn and I know that is a good substitute because that's what I'm using for my ihs. I'm interested in hearing about the more manly version of fetching too because my fiance wants a pair for himself. I thought maybe cabling all the way up would make it more manly but I'm new to cabling so I really don't know!

Look Ma, no holes!

I finished my first pair (note, I said first...) of Fetching gloves yesterday. I got a little sidetracked with a "ballband warshrag" but that's a whole different KAL! Thanks again for the comments on how to deal with the holes around the thumb pick-up. A few strategically placed stitches and voila! No holes!

Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, color 300503 Pea Green (stashbuster)

Has anyone tried these in a DK weight yarn? I'd like to make these as gifts for a couple of friends, but they both have small hands. As is, these are fine, but I'm thinking this yarn is springy enough that doing down a weight will make them a bit more snug without being too small. Perhaps Rowan Cashsoft DK will be a good substitute. Thoughts?

I figured out what I was doing wrong...actually, I wasn't really doing anything wrong - just being goofy. So I finished the thumb and one of the pair is done. Here it is:

I would not make a good hand model - I've been a habitual nail biter since childhood! They feel a little loose in the wrist, but maybe if I have a long-sleeve shirt on it won't be like that.

It's not pretty because I did rip it out twice and start over. Also, some people mentioned having problems with holes. To combat this, I pick up more than the required stitches (this pattern says to pick up 2) and then just knit them together to get the right amount. I did end up with a small hole, but I think that was because of me ripping it out over and over.

I'm just about finished with my first fetching (note - not my first pair, the first of the pair!) and I'm having some difficulty with, you guessed it, the thumb! I've done it twice now and I can't figure out how it's supposed to work.

I have no trouble picking up the stitches. What I want to know is, should the wrong side (the side that won't show) or the right side be facing me when I knit the thumb? I've done it both ways and I could swear that either way the wrong side of the thumb ended up on the right side of the rest of the piece. And I'm getting frustrated. I thought I would put it down until I heard from someone from this KAL.

Well, here they are. My two-toned fetching gloves. Here is what happened. My local yarn store was having a Debbie Bliss Merino yarn sale(70% off!!!). So I grabbed two colors thinking, "two gloves for the price of, well, cheap". I came home and began working on the first glove in the blue and suddenly thought, "I seem to be running low on yarn yardage awfully fast,". Well, after the shopping high wore off I realized I bought DB merino not DB cashmerino. The merino is only 78 yards! Opps! so, to make the best of the situation and to not add to my already overweight yarn stash, I came up with the two-toned version. What do you think?
Next pair I will do in a solid color and I don't think I will use the picot bind off (not a big fan of that one). Can't wait to see what your gloves fetch.

So now I join the ranks of those with completed Fetching gloves. Except they're not for me. *sigh*If I recall, I used colourway 201 (I went with the suggested yarn, is it not so very nice?). I had to go up to 5.00mm needles because I am a tight knitter. I also found the same thumb-hole problem that others have (photographed by Wendeea few posts back), I used some not-so-awful stitching to close those up. I'm planning to use Grignasco Jazz Print, which is a merino wool in pinks, greens and browns. It's a tad thicker than the pattern calls for, so we'll have to see how this goes - I may have to chance to a different yarn.

Hello! Glad to be in the company of fellow Fetching knitters! I'm nearly done with my first Fetching mitt. I'm pleased that I happened to have some Cashmerino Aran (pea green) in my stash from long ago. What a perfect way to put it to use! For some reason I'm having trouble picking up the stiches around the thumb - a small hole has surfaced. Has anyone else come across this or is it operator error? I'm going to hold off on the bind off of the thumb in case I need to frog the thumb. Any suggestions?

I don't think I'll get two gloves out of my ball of yarn. Fortunately I have two balls - and even though the one-skein idea is great, the result is certainly worth the extra ball! Oh, and about the picot bind off - it's sweet, but does roll down a bit. Has anyone had that experience as well?

I finished fetching Monday during a Spanish class, which made me wish I knew knitting terms in Spanish. It looks like Ginger and I had the same choice of yarn. :o)

If I knit this pattern again I'll definitely make them longer on the wrist as well as over the knuckles. Being such a quick knit was a bonus!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this KAL. I fell in love with this Knitty pattern as soon as I saw it - and one ball of yarn (basically) is a dream for me. I have cast on and all ready I think this will be a quick knit if I focus on them. I have several other projects on the needles so you know how that goes. I finished my first pair of Fetching last night. I started out with 2 balls of yarn since I didn't want to risk running out, like some others have.

I am officially done with my first pair of fetching! :) I ran out of yarn on the second to last row and still had the thumb to go. So much for a one skein project. Luckily, after three months of buying the first one, I was able to find the SAME dye lot at a different AC Moore. Talk about luck!

I also tried the russian join for the first time. Let me just tell you....if you haven't tried it, go Google it now! It is so awesome! You can't even tell where it joins! :) Hope to see other FOs soon.

One fetching almost finished..

I've done the main of fetching glove one, all that's left is to knit the thumb and weave in ends. I've cast on for glove two, I'm going to knit that one up first before doing the thumbs, just to be sure I have enough yarn. That way if I don't can just do the thumbs in a complementary colour, i have a small part ball of navy merino yarn here that would do the job if necessary.

I'm really pleased with the glove I have done. The pale blue works really well, it really shows up the cable nicely. This was so quick and easy to knit up on dpns, but I do find it hard to keep track of rows, so Id like to learn the magic loop to do both gloves at once and that would ensure both are the exact same length. I think I got this one matching the pattern, we'll soon find out!

It fits quite snugly and it's ever so thick and warm, it's quite amusing really making thick wool gloves in the hottest part of summer, even if they are fingerless. I have some stray debbie bliss cotton silk aran here, do you think that would work for this pattern? It culd make summery gloves for cool evenings after barbecues.. Would I need to alter the pattern at all, i'm not sure that a cotton silk blend would as as stretchy as the cashsoft?

I'm just casting on for my set of fetching gloves. I'm using this ball of light blue ryc cashsoft aran that has lost it's label.

What's the verdict on the picot BO? It looks quite pretty to me.

To go along with the theme of pictures, I had my dbf take this pic. I attempted the picot bind off and I have mixed feelings about it. What do you all think? It turned out very soft and I am ready to cast on for the second. These are fun and fast! ;)

FFO (Finished Fetching Object)

I have new respect for hand models. I nearly melted while my son tried to get the perfect Fetching Foto. (I don't even wear this coat in Florida in the winter.) The pattern was fast and easy to understand. I got a little confused at the bind off. But, when I knit these again, I think I'll tighten it up more around the top of the hand. The pattern calls for some cast ons to creat the picot effect. It was a little loose around the top. Binding off with a smaller needle is another idea.

The Louise Herding Kashmir was a perfect match on size 6 needles, but it comes in 83 yds. The Debbie Bliss is listed at 98 yards, and I'm definitely going to need another skein to finish Fetching "right".

Can't wait to see more colors.

Fetching in RED

This is a great pattern that's fun to knit. My LYS did not have Debbie Bliss, but Louise Herding Kashmir Aran is an exact substitute, same weight, same gauge. There were other great colors, but I decided to go with red. You know...it's the "new black", so it will go with everything! (We'll see about that, but you'll definitely see me coming.)

I have a skein of Karabella SuperYak. It's quite soft and cozy-50% Yak and 50% Merino. Might be a bit heavy though - 14 sts and 18 rows to 10cm on 6.5mm needles (that's US 10.5). The skein is 125 yards. What do you think?

You know you have too much yarn when...

you think that you need to go out and buy supplies and can't start a KAL and then double check and not only do you have everything you need, you have three times the amount of yarn that the pattern calls for! I don't have the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran but I realized that this yarn that I bought on sale at AC Moore is almost the exact same yarn. There is less cashmere (6% vs. 12%), has 45% merino wool and 49% Microfiber,but it is the same yardage (this one has 2 more yards) and the gauge is exactly the same. I am going to be good and attempt to use this yarn instead of going out and buying more yarn. I was also happy to find that I had the right size DPNs. I'm all set! Now which color to choose....

I'm really excited that there has been interest in this knitalong, and I will be starting to give access to this blog for posting to those who have signed up!

General Info:

1) It's not to late to sign up. I will leave this open indefinitely to those who would like to join. There's nothing worse than finding a KAL you would like to join and then finding out it is closed to new participants.

2) You may start your knitting at any time, and finish at any time. We'd love to see progress pics!

3) I'd like to have this be as relaxed as possible, because I know we all have busy lives.

4) If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to email me.

Fetching Knit Along

As many of us already know, the Summer 2006 issue of Knitty is up. There is one pattern that seems to be very popular already, which is called Fetching. Check out the link for the pattern. I thought we might all benefit from a Fetching Knit Along!

Who's in?

This will be my first time hosting a knit along, and I'm really excited.

If you choose to join, I'll give you access to this blog, so you can update us with progress, alterations, and anything else you wish that pertains to Fetching.

Since I'm awful with buttons, I'd be more than grateful to have a button or two donated.

I'm thinking we should call this KAL "Fetching 2006".

I know this is a small project and should be a relatively quick knit, and most KALs are for larger projects, but I thought that it we made it a KAL, people who haven't done cables before and may be intimidated, might be more likely to take part if they tackled it in a group. Those of us who have done cables know how magical they can be to create.

Beginners, intermediates, advanced, YOU ARE ALL WELCOME!!
